Breast Augmentation – Implant Pocket Placement

Any woman who is considering a breast augmentation procedure has several things to think about, but one of the most important aspects to think about, has to do with the pocket placement. This is the pocket into which the actually implant will be placed, so of course it will have a direct impact on the end result. Women also need to bear in mind that pocket placement can also interfere with breast feeding, so it’s not something which should be taken lightly.

If you intend going for a breast augmentation procedure, you’ll find you have several options, and of course each option comes with its own pros and cons. Let’s go ahead and take a look at the four basic options:

Option 1 – Sub-Glandular Placement

In this type of breast augmentation procedure, the implant will be placed between the mammary glands and the pectoral muscle. One downside to this method however, is that it can result in a woman being unable to breastfeed. Furthermore, the possibility of a rupture is slightly higher with this method than it is with other methods. With that said, it is almost unheard of nowadays for a breast implant to rupture. The biggest advantage of this option is that the end result tends to produce the most aesthetically pleasing look.

Option 2 – Sub-Fascial Placement

It is widely believed that this type of breast augmentation procedure lowers the risk of a rupture, because while the implant is still placed beneath the mammary gland, it’s actually placed just below the fascia of the pectoral muscle. Some also believe this method is superior in terms of the implant staying in place. With that said, there are also many who disagree, hence the reason why the debate is still ongoing.

Option 3 – Sub-Pectoral Placement

This is undeniably the most common and most popular type of breast augmentation procedure. In this case, the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle. The main reason for concern with this method is that it does cause the body a considerable amount of trauma. As far as a realistic look is concerned, this method comes out on top, and another advantage of this method is that it allows for women to breastfeed should they ever decide to have a child later in life.

Option 4 – Sub-Muscular Placement

In this form of breast augmentation procedure, the implant is placed in such a way so that it is completely covered by muscle. Because of this, it’s virtually impossible for the implants to move, and there’s the least amount of risk as far as rupturing is concerned. Many woman who opt for this method, do so for safety and stability reasons. Interestingly enough, this method tends to be the most popular between women who are undergoing breast reconstruction surgery rather than breast augmentation.

When you go to discuss a breast augmentation procedure with a cosmetic surgeon, you’ll have plenty of time to discuss the various options regarding implant pocket placement, so never agree to anything until all your questions have been answered. Remember, there’s more to breast augmentation than price alone.
