Breast augmentation has been around for a long time already, although in the past, the procedure wasn’t always approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in America. In more recent times, a law was passed which requires all foods, drinks, medical supplies, drugs and etc. to be approved by the FDA before they are made available to the public. Of course, because this law wasn’t always in place, the very early breast implants were being used without any form of approval, and then even when the law was passed, those products which had already been manufactured where excluded. In other words, they were grandfathered; meaning doctors could continue using implants without the need for approval, providing the said implants were manufactured before the law came into effect.

Towards the end of the 1980′s many silicone breast implants were taken off the market. This happened when the FDA scrapped the grandfather clause due to several rumors regarding medical complications caused by these implants. Even though “grandfathered” silicone implants were pulled off the market, saline filled implants were still permitted. Because saline is very similar to fluid which occurs naturally in the body, these implants were deemed to be safe.

Several years after the silicone implants were pulled, and after a considerable amount of research had been done, they were eventually approved by the FDA and once again allowed onto the market. With that said, the FDA has imposed strict regulations regarding the use of them.

For example, while saline filled implants can be used in women over the age of 18, the silicone implants can only be used in women over the age of 22. The FDA introduced these age restrictions because they felt that women below these ages were not yet fully capable of making decisions which could essentially affect them for life.

At present, only Mentor and Allergan have been approved to manufacture saline and silicone implants. These are the only two manufacturers to have been given the green light. While the FDA gave approval for saline filled implants in the year 2000, it wasn’t until 2006 that the silicone implants got the stamp of approval.

There are currently studies underway regarding a new “Gummy Bear” implant. These basically utilize silicone with a thicker consistency than the traditional silicone implants, and because of this, it is believed they’ll be safer should they rupture. How long it will take before these get FDA approval is anyone’s guess.

Clinical research is still ongoing with regards to both the saline implants and the silicone implants in order to establish whether or not they will have any negative long term effects. So far, the implants which have FDA approval are deemed to be safe, but one needs to bear in mind that any medical procedure comes with certain risks.

Risks involving breast augmentation include the following:

* Loss of nipple sensitivity
* Asymmetry
* Inability to breastfeed
* Scarring
* Rupture
* Infection

Any woman who is considering breast augmentation should always consult a duly qualified and board register cosmetic surgeon in order to discuss the various options available, and also the associated risks involved.

Any woman who is considering a breast augmentation procedure has several things to think about, but one of the most important aspects to think about, has to do with the pocket placement. This is the pocket into which the actually implant will be placed, so of course it will have a direct impact on the end result. Women also need to bear in mind that pocket placement can also interfere with breast feeding, so it’s not something which should be taken lightly.

If you intend going for a breast augmentation procedure, you’ll find you have several options, and of course each option comes with its own pros and cons. Let’s go ahead and take a look at the four basic options:

Option 1 – Sub-Glandular Placement

In this type of breast augmentation procedure, the implant will be placed between the mammary glands and the pectoral muscle. One downside to this method however, is that it can result in a woman being unable to breastfeed. Furthermore, the possibility of a rupture is slightly higher with this method than it is with other methods. With that said, it is almost unheard of nowadays for a breast implant to rupture. The biggest advantage of this option is that the end result tends to produce the most aesthetically pleasing look.

Option 2 – Sub-Fascial Placement

It is widely believed that this type of breast augmentation procedure lowers the risk of a rupture, because while the implant is still placed beneath the mammary gland, it’s actually placed just below the fascia of the pectoral muscle. Some also believe this method is superior in terms of the implant staying in place. With that said, there are also many who disagree, hence the reason why the debate is still ongoing.

Option 3 – Sub-Pectoral Placement

This is undeniably the most common and most popular type of breast augmentation procedure. In this case, the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle. The main reason for concern with this method is that it does cause the body a considerable amount of trauma. As far as a realistic look is concerned, this method comes out on top, and another advantage of this method is that it allows for women to breastfeed should they ever decide to have a child later in life.

Option 4 – Sub-Muscular Placement

In this form of breast augmentation procedure, the implant is placed in such a way so that it is completely covered by muscle. Because of this, it’s virtually impossible for the implants to move, and there’s the least amount of risk as far as rupturing is concerned. Many woman who opt for this method, do so for safety and stability reasons. Interestingly enough, this method tends to be the most popular between women who are undergoing breast reconstruction surgery rather than breast augmentation.

When you go to discuss a breast augmentation procedure with a cosmetic surgeon, you’ll have plenty of time to discuss the various options regarding implant pocket placement, so never agree to anything until all your questions have been answered. Remember, there’s more to breast augmentation than price alone.

When you go for a breast augmentation procedure, there are a number of things to consider. For example, you’ll need to discuss implant placement with the surgeon, and you’ll also want to discuss the various incision options available to you. After all, you don’t want to be left with large unsightly scars to remind you of the procedure each time you admire your new assets in front of a mirror.

As with so many things in life, all the various incision options come with their own pros and cons. Let’s go ahead and take a brief look at the different incision types:

Periareolar

With this type of incision, the cut is made around the areola, and because this is where the two skin tones meet, the resultant scarring will virtually be invisible. Apart from the scarring aspect, the periareolar technique is also considered to be highly effective for breast implants simply because it’s convenient, in that it allows the surgeon a lot of flexibility. When doing this procedure, bleeding is also easily controlled, thus making the procedure safer for you.

Inframammary

This incision type involves the surgeon cutting in the crease under the breast, just where the breast and chest meet. Once again, as with the above mentioned technique, the scar is usually hidden from view. In fact, unless your breasts point upwards, the scars will be totally concealed. If the truth be known, this is more than likely the technique most liked by those carrying out the procedure, simply because they have a clear field of vision for optimum placement.

The only possible downside to this technique is that the scars can sometimes give the game away if you wear a very small swimsuit, such as a bikini for example. So, if you spend a great deal of time wearing skimpy bathing suits in public and you don’t want others to know you’ve had breast augmentation work done, you may want to consider one of the other options.

Axillary

If you’re well and truly desperate to keep your scars a well guarded secret, then this is certainly a technique you may want to consider. The biggest downside to this incision type is that it puts the cosmetic surgeon under a lot of strain. The reason for this being that the cut is made in the armpit and the actual procedure is carried out remotely with the use of a tiny camera. With the incision being in the armpit, it will be completely hidden from view, and even if the scars are visible at times, not many people would associate them with breast augmentation work.

If you want to consider this option, you need to bear in mind that it’s an extremely difficult procedure to perform, and as such, you will need to find a highly skilled surgeon, and one who has the necessary experience with this specific technique. Also, in the event that a complication arises, the surgeon may be forced to go in through your chest.

When you have breast augmentation work done, you should come away feeling ecstatic, and that is only going to happen if everything goes well. Choosing the right incision type can make a world of difference, not only for you, but also for your doctor, so it really is something you need to consider carefully. If you have any questions or doubts, always make sure you discuss them openly with the surgeon so that you can both have complete peace of mind.

First of all, if you’re a guy who is currently considering having male breast implants, then you need to know you’re certainly not alone. Yes, in the past, it was almost unheard for a man to request the procedure, but times have changed. Nowadays, cosmetic surgeons are frequently carrying out the procedure on men, who just like women; all have their own reasons for wanting implants.

In this short article, we’ll look at some of the reasons why men choose to have male breast implants, but you should also bear in mind that there are a few other options you have available to you in order to increase the size of your breasts. Even though male breast implants are deemed to be extremely safe, you need to remember that there are always certain risks, irrespective of what type of surgery you have. Natural products on the other hand come with no risks at all, so before you choose to go under the knife, there may be a few alternatives worth considering.

Most men who choose to have breast implants, do so because they want to enhance their looks. There are also those who choose to have the procedure done because they feel they will be more content with life if they become a woman instead. Men who wish to have a sex change will almost always start with male breast implants before having the more complicated procedures carried out.

The reason a man wants larger breasts could also be purely psychological, in which case a may simply not be able to accept the fact that he’s a man. If that’s the case, he may well never find happiness until he manages to perceive himself as being a woman, and having male breast implants can go a long way towards helping him accept his sexuality.

Whatever a man’s reasons may be, the basic process of placing the implants within his body is virtually the same as it is with a woman. In other words, the implants can be placed either above or under the muscle. With that said, most surgeons would suggest sub-muscular placement simply because men in general don’t have much breast tissue.

As with female implants, male breast implants can be silicone or saline filled. Furthermore, male breast implants come in a number of different sizes, just as do the female implants. One difference however, is that most men find implants which have been placed beneath the pectoral muscles to feel quite strange at first. With that said, the strange sensation tends to disappear after about two to three months.

Most surgeons will advise men to take their time before making a decision regarding male breast implants, because one the procedure has been done, some men then have difficulty living with the fact that they’ve physically moved a step closer to their more feminine side. This isn’t always the case, and most men who choose to go under the knife have no regrets, but instead, it usually makes them a lot happier in life.

For the most part, breast implant surgery, or breast augmentation is deemed to be extremely safe, and it’s hardly surprising really when you consider it’s amongst the most popular of all cosmetic procedures. Even though the procedure is considered safe, it’s still surgery none the less, and as with all types of surgery, there is always a possibility of complications arising.

Although not strictly a complication, patients should realize that they will have to endure a certain amount of pain following breast surgery. If the pain is insistent however, then it needs to be brought to the attention of the surgeon who performed the procedure, because it could be an indication that there’s a problem. For example, incorrect implant sizes can cause pain, just as wrong placements can.

All breast implants on the market today are either silicone based implants or saline implants. The “bags” which house these compounds have been known to leak or rupture on occasions. In fact, ruptured implants account for the largest number of breast surgery complications. Fortunately however, it is relatively easy for a woman to notice if one of her implants has ruptured, in that the effected breast will appear to have deflated, or else it will have changed shape. Interestingly enough, studies have shown that implant which end up rupturing, usually do so within the first few months. A ruptured implant needs to be removed as soon as it’s detected, and then replaced with a fresh one by means of replacement surgery.

Capsular contracture is another breast surgery complication which can arise with breast augmentation. This conditioned occurs when the scar tissue surrounding the implant ends up squeezing the implant, although this usually only happens if there’s an infection present. The telltale signs are excessive tightness, a change of shape, and persistent pain. Immediate surgery is necessary for this complication, and depending on the severity, implant replacement may be required as well.

Infections are one of the most common breast surgery complications, but this is true with all types of surgery. While some infections are relatively mild, others can be severe enough to cause a condition known as “Toxic Shock Syndrome.” If left unchecked, this can be life threatening. Any person who has recently been under the knife, and who starts experiencing symptoms such as a fever, diarrhea, nausea, or dizziness, should immediately go and see a doctor. If an infection has taken hold, immediate surgery will be required in order to remove the implant.

Apart from non-life threatening complications, there can also be other complications such as loss of sensitivity, or the inability to breast feed, While these may not be life threatening, they can be an unpleasant nuisance, and of course they can have an impact on one’s sex life.

Breast surgery complications are few and far between nowadays, but even so, it would be foolish for anyone to undergo the procedure without at least being familiar with the possible complications, and without realizing that there is always a chance that something could go wrong

Contrary to what you may believe, breast feeding when you have breast implants is completely safe. In fact, breast implants have absolutely no effect on breast milk at all, and therefore, there is no risk as far as your child’s safety is concerned. If you’ve recently had breast augmentation work done, and you’ve just given birth, you can go ahead and breast feed you baby just as you would otherwise have done. With that said, sometimes things can go wrong with implants, and as such, it’s best that you familiarize yourself with the potential problems.

Incision Related Problems

If your surgeon made the implant incision by cutting around the areola, there is a potential for problems, but only if the wound has not yet had sufficient time to heal. Now, don’t for a minute thing that your baby’s sucking will tear open the wound, because that is not going to happen. Instead, when the incision was made, several important nerves would have been severed, and these need time to recover, or else they won’t be capable of sending a signal to the brain, telling it milk needs to be released. The best way to avoid this problem is by getting implants done well before your expected delivery date. Of course if your surgeon made the incision in the crease under your breast, or in the armpit, then this type of problem cannot arise.

Increased Sensitivity

Breast enlargement invariably causes your nipples and the surrounding areas to become more sensitive. This can cause a certain amount of unpleasantness when your baby sucks, but while it’s painful for some women; most only experience a tickling sensation. Having said that, the exact opposite can also happen on occasions, in which case a certain amount of sensitivity will be lost following breast augmentation work. Increased sensitivity usually go away over a period of time, but it can take several months or even a few years.

Leaking Implants

People have in the past expressed concern over the possibility of saline or silicon leaking into breast milk in the case of a ruptured implant. While such concerns are perfectly understandable, one should also bear in mind that there have been so such incidences documented. Again, there has never even been a single case where silicone or saline has leaked and contaminated breast milk. Additionally, doctors have even gone as far as saying that if implants did leak, and the contents entered into the breast milk, the nursing baby would stand to benefit from the extra nutrients, in that both kinds of implant contain essential minerals.

Breast feeding with implants is perfectly safe, but it is still advisable to get the procedure done well before you intend having your baby. This will at least ensure that breast feeding isn’t uncomfortable for you, and of course it will allow enough time for the nerves to heal so that milk can be supplied to the baby.

Even though the vast majority of women who go for breast augmentation work experience no problems whatsoever, there are cases where women are forced to undergo breast implant removal. Sometimes this can be several years after having the implants put in, but it can also happen within just a few months. In this article, we’re going to take a look at some of the basic facts which women need to be aware of, irrespective of whether or not they have any need for breast implant removal at present.

As you no doubt can imagine, there are several reasons that could result in you having to have breast implants removed. For example, the actual shape of your breast can change after breast augmentation, the actual implants can move about, sag, deflate, or even rupture. If one of your implants rupture, breast implant removal will be necessary due to the fact that the implant’s contents will be leaking into your body.

Capsular contracture is another complication which can result in breast implant removal. This complication arises when the scar tissue surrounding the implant begins to exert excessive pressure on the implant. This can result in bleeding, infection, or even cancer. Dead tissue can also begin forming in the vicinity of the implant. This is known as necrosis, which is of course a dangerous and potentially life threatening condition which requires immediate medical intervention.

The procedure for breast implant removal can be done under local anesthetic, but for the most part, surgeons will include the use of intravenous sedation. Alternatively, your doctor may decide its best to use a general anesthetic instead. For the most part, the procedure takes under one hour, providing there are no additional complications. In order to remove the implant, the surgeon will make an incision in the crease underneath the breast, or else he will cut around the areola which surrounds the nipple. Depending on your surgeon, if you have a saline implant that needs to be removed, it may be inflated in order to make the removal process easier.

Recovery time after breast implant removal is remarkably quick, and in general, patients can resume their basic activities within just a few days and by the time two or three weeks has passed, full activities can be resumed.

As with any type of surgery, there is a potential for side effects and complications with breast implant removal. The most common side effect following the procedure is swelling, bruising, and a certain amount of pain. Other complications could include things such as loss of nipple sensitivity, bleeding, loose skin, and scarring.

When someone undergoes breast implant removal surgery, they run the risk of having to live with a major deformity in their breast or breasts unless they have the implant replaced. Those who choose not to have the implants replaced will often have to live with chest wall deformity and tissue atrophy. Furthermore, sagging breasts are virtually inevitable when implants are removed and not replaced.

Apart from cosmetic appearances, breast implant removal can also cause some women to experience emotional problems due to the sudden change in the shape of their breasts. Women who do experience psychological symptoms need to realize that it’s important to seek professional advice if the symptoms don’t go away within a reasonable time frame. If left unchecked, even small psychological symptoms can become so severe that those suffering from them end up becoming withdrawn, and even suicidal.

Right after surgery, most patients are admitted to the hospital or facility where the procedure was performed to receive round-the-clock care and to ensure fast breast implants / augmentation recovery. After you wake up, a nurse will be assigned to see to your needs like delivering your medications, checking your bandages and seeing to your comfort. During such time, the doctor may put you under a round of prescription painkillers and antibiotics to prevent infections and alleviate your discomforts.

It is normal to feel tired and sore as your breast area remain swollen and sensitive to physical contact. You may experience difficulty raising your arms above your head. It would be best to limit your arm movement to hasten the healing process. Hence, you will be instructed to wear surgical bra or elasticized bandage. After the doctor declares that you are safe to go home, you may need someone to take you as you won’t be able to drive.

After the surgery

In the days and weeks following your surgery, you may experience a range of physical as well as emotional changes. For instance, you need to get used to wearing an elastic bandage or surgical bra around the operated area no matter how uncomfortable it is. The strap is not just meant to care for your incisions but also to help push the implants down. Bruising and swelling will be a normal sight. Usually, incisions are taped for up to 6 months after the surgery. To minimize the formation of scars on the incision area, talk with your doctor on how to go about your incision care.

Postoperative care may also involve medical help for depression. There are patients who experience emotional changes and depression in the days and weeks following the surgery. Aside from the lingering effects of anesthesia, the discomfort and side effects of medications may affect your emotional state.

Keep in mind that the healing process is something that can never be pushed. Have patience in waiting for your body to heal. Pushing the breast augmentation recovery process might only do more harm than good. It will only diminish the quality of your surgery’s results.

Post-operative Care

Postoperative care for breast augmentation procedures is generally simple. All you need to do is follow your surgeon’s instructions and be prompt at his scheduled checkups. Since each person heals differently, your surgeon will advise you on the post-operative care instructions that should serve your unique breast augmentation recovery needs.

For drains, thin plastic tubes may be left right at your incision site to conveniently collect and remove excess fluid. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to properly empty your drains. Drains are usually removed at your first follow-up appointment.

To alleviate swelling and bruising, drinking water, cutting back on salt and doing light exercises are definitely helpful. Put a cold compress on the site to enjoy soothing effects. If the swelling and bruising seem to not improve in the days or weeks after your surgery, do not hesitate to call your surgeon.

To manage soreness, your surgeon may put you under a careful dosage of pain medications like vicodin, Tylenol and Percocet. Never take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers unless your surgeon says that it is safe to do so. Side effects of self-medication with OTC pain relievers include excessive bleeding.

On your daily activities

Cutting back on movement, particularly those that involve your arms is essential during the first few weeks after your surgery. However, your surgeon may ask you to do light exercises after such time that your swollen and bruised chest area has improved. This is to prevent blood clots from forming. However, strenuous activates must be avoided at least during the first three weeks after the surgery to avoid setting back your healing.

When sleeping with your new breasts, it is best to sleep with your upper back and head slightly elevated to reduce pain and swelling. Bathing must be postponed until such time that your incisions and sutures have been removed.

Follow-up examinations

Never miss your scheduled follow-up examination. The exact timing of such meeting is important in thoroughly monitoring your breast augmentation recovery. It is during these times that you can discuss your concerns as well as discomforts. It is important to be honest with your surgeon to get the best post-operative care that will hasten your healing. As soon as your surgeon gives you the green light, you can happily resume your daily activities and return to your work.

In a perfect world no woman would ever need to consider repair or revision surgery done after having gone for a breast augmentation.

Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and no matter how much technology advances, breast augmentation can go wrong at times.

Implant Problems

For example, breast implants can and do leak from time to time. If you chose to have saline implants, and a leak occurs, the implant will deflate rapidly as the fluid leaks into the body. Silicone on the other hand will not be absorbed into the body, and therefore a ruptured silicon implant is more difficult to detect. If you have any reason to believe that one of your silicon implants has ruptured, it’s highly recommended that you go for a checkup as soon as possible. Depending on the results, the surgeon will need to perform revision surgery in order to either repair the implant or to replace it.

Sagging Correction

No matter how skilled a surgeon is breast implants always end up sagging to a certain extent due to their weight, and because of gravity. This is perfectly normal, and to a great extent, it helps to create a more natural appearance. With that said; if one implant sags more than the other it can make for an undesirable appearance, in that your breasts will look as if they are lopsided. If this happens, your surgeon will probably recommend revision surgery in order to change the implant pocket from skin to muscle. Alternatively, the surgeon may decide its best to perform a mastopexy in order to support the implants. This procedure is also commonly referred to as being a “breast lift.”

Capsular Contracture

A complication known as capsular contracture can also result in you having to have revision surgery done. This is when the scar tissue thickens to such an extent that it begins exerting excessive pressure on the implant, thus changing the implant’s shape, and in some cases, even its position. Depending on the seriousness of the condition, a surgeon may decide to remove the scar tissue which supports the implant, or else he or she may decide to place the implant deeper.

Discomfort

In some cases, breast implants can feel stiff and uncomfortable, and this could result in you having to change the type of implant you have. For example, if you had saline implants put in, you may at some point in the future need to have them replaced with silicon ones. Having said that, the problem can sometimes be rectified simply by deflating the existing implants or by filling them some more.

Appearance

Although it’s not very common, breast augmentation can sometimes cause the areolas to become too large. This can be rectified by changing the position of the implants, or by making adjustments to the implant pockets.

Upgrading

Many women who go for breast implant surgery are so thrilled with the results that they end up wanting to change the size of their implants at some point. This can be done by any experienced cosmetic surgeon, but in some cases, your doctor may point out that your breasts can be made bigger simply by filling your existing implants a bit more.

Think Long Before Surgery And Choose Your Surgeon Carefully

There are many reasons why people require revision surgery after having breast augmentation work done, so this is of course something all women should bear in mind prior to having breast implant surgery done in the first place.

While the procedure requires a lot of thought concerning things such as implant placements, incision types, etc. – most women worry primarily about breast implant sizes, bearing in mind that bigger isn’t always better.

Contrary to what many people believe, breast augmentation has been around for approximately fifty years already, but of course techniques have evolved, and the actual implants themselves have come a long way since those first procedures took place. Whereas breast implants were considered to be quite risky in the past, nowadays they are deemed to be extremely safe, largely because the industry is regulated by the FDA. Today, there continues to be a huge demand for breast implant surgery, and in order to meet the growing demand implant manufacturers have created a number of breast implant sizes.

No longer is breast augmentation reserved only for the rich and famous, but instead, it’s become increasingly affordable, and some surgeons even offer various payment plans. Of course most of these procedures are carried out on women who want to improve the look or size of their breasts, but it is also a procedure frequently performed on women who have lost a breast or two due to cancer. Irrespective of what a person’s reasons may be, breast implant sizes always come into the equation. When the time comes for a patient to go under the knife, choosing the ideal implant size can seem a very daunting task, and for that reason, patients should always discuss breast implant sizes with their doctor well in advance

Although the affordability of breast augmentation has done much to entice women to have the procedure carried out, it’s the immediate results one sees that have had the biggest impact of all. Once a woman has familiarized herself with the various breast implant sizes, and she’s made up her mind, she’ll see the results immediately once the surgeon is finished. In the vast majority of cases, women can resume their normal activities within a week after having the procedure done.

In years gone by, when breast implants first became popular, most women wanted the biggest implants available. Nowadays however, times have changed, and most women now tend to favor natural looking breasts. Rather than focusing primarily on size, today’s women want firmness, and they want breasts with an aesthetically pleasing look. When it comes to breast implant sizes, cosmetic surgeons can advise women what size would be best suited to them by using a process known as sizing analysis.

The breast implant size you choose should be based entirely on the type of look you desire, but generally speaking, cosmetic surgeons recommend that women choose breast implant sizes which are no more than two sizes bigger than their current breast size. The main reason for this is because it results in a more subtle change, meaning that friends and family won’t all of a sudden see you with breasts which are twice as big as they were before.

When you start considering the various breast implant sizes, you should also bear in mind that the average man nowadays prefers natural looking breasts, and when you choose a size wisely, you’ll feel so good about yourself as well, because you’ll know you’re turning heads.

While information regarding breast enhancement products such as creams and pills is plentiful on the internet, there seems to be a shortage of information regarding actual breast anatomy. The fact of the matter is however, any women who is even remotely interested in the idea of breast enlargement, should make a conscious effort to familiarize herself with breast anatomy, given the fact that problems can and do arise.

The breasts, which appear as firm spherical protrusions in young women, are undeniably one of a woman’s most noticeable sex organs. Located in the center of the breast is the ‘areola’, from which the nipple protrudes. Under close examination, one can see eight to ten openings which allow for milk to pass during lactation.

In the vast majority, breasts start appearing when a girl reaches puberty, which is usually around the age of thirteen. The mammary glands (breasts) will then continue to grow bigger. Once a woman gives birth, her breasts will often feel very tend, and when squeezed, a colorless liquid will be secreted. This liquid is considered to be of extreme importance to a newborn baby, as it’s believed to trigger the infant’s immune system. After about the third day, the colorless liquid is replaced by breast milk. Nursing mothers will also notice their areolae become noticeably darker, and their nipples become more prominent in order to accommodate the sucking of her baby.

The mammary glands are essentially masses of tissue lined with milk secreting cubical cells. The actual tissue mass is a collection of tiny lobules which are held in place by means of fibrous tissue and fat, and this is also what’s responsible for the shape of a woman’s breasts. Milk is produced within the lobules before passing through several ducts which in turn join together to form the eight to ten ducts though which milk is delivered to the sucking infant.

Although there has been much debate on the subject, it is generally accepted that sexual stimulation from squeezing or pressing the nipples is more effective when a woman’s nipples are erect, or at least, when they are firm. Women have for centuries been concerned with maintaining the shape of there breasts, and while the natural aging process makes sagging breasts inevitable, the effect can be prolonged by wearing a suitable bra. With that said, a woman’s breasts will still start to sag, irrespective of how she looks after them. The important thing to remember is that no form of medication should be used without discussing it with a duly qualified physician beforehand.

There are a mind boggling amount of products on the market which promise women “ludicrous” results. Just as with so many other products in the cosmetics industry, so breast enhancement pills and creams can do more harm than good. If you’re currently toying with the idea of have your breasts enlarged, makes sure you at least do some credible research.

Although you will want to wake up with the breasts of a voluptuous goddess, you have to accept that recovery from breast implant surgery takes time to complete. Besides, you must never rush your recovery period since doing so increases the risk for breast injuries that, in turn, leads to longer recovery period, lesser quality of the results and higher levels of complications.

Your doctor may even have to perform revision surgery to correct whatever damage has been done by rushing the recovery process during the first implantation procedure. This early, we strongly suggest following your doctor’s orders after the surgery for your own good in many aspects.

What to Expect

Depending on the procedure just performed, the recovery from breast implant surgery phase may be as little as a few days to a few weeks. For example, in outpatient procedures, the recovery time is usually shorter than the one where other surgical operations like breast lift and liposuction have been performed as well.

In most cases, nonetheless, you should be up and about on your strength immediately after the surgery. This is not to show off your breasts but to ensure that blood clots on your legs will not form. Walking for just a few minutes every few minutes will do the trick in this regard.

You can also expect the following things during your recovery from breast implant surgery:

•	Scars – Under the hands of a skilled surgeon, incision scars will almost be invisible unless under close examination. For the first six weeks, however, your scars may remain pinkish, firm and slightly visible but will soon fade significantly. Keep in mind that scars will only fade but never disappear completely.
•	Icing the Breasts – Placing cold compresses or ice packs on your breasts 48 hours after the operation helps in lessening the swelling.
•	Drains – These are placed inside the incision to remove excess fluid. You have to deal with them for a few days after the surgery in terms of emptying and caring for said drains.
•	Swelling and Bruising – Your breasts may be swollen for 3-4 months while the bruises will fade a few weeks after the surgical procedure. You will be advised to drink more water and eat lesser amounts of salt as well as engage in light exercise to hasten your recovery from breast implant surgery.
•	Bathing – You will not be able to take a bath until the sutures are taken out of the incision. You will be advised to clean the breast area as gently as possible as well as to wear bras for after breast implant surgery to help support the implants.
• Sleeping – You must sleep with your head and upper back elevated so as to avoid fluid buildup in the breasts. Sleeping on your back is the only option so you might have to look into pressure beds, too.
•	Loss of sensitivity – Unfortunately, you will lose a certain degree of sensitivity and sensation in and around your breasts after the surgery. This will only last for a few weeks but once the sensations do return, you may experience unpleasantness in the form of heat, tingling and pricking as well as pain and itchiness mainly because nerve sensations are back in order. In a few cases, however, sensitivity never returns months after the other aspects of recovery from breast implant surgery have been completed.
•	Nipple Oversensitivity – On the other end of the spectrum, you may also experience too-tender nipples. You can protect these breast parts by wearing the right bras for after breast implant surgery, which will shield your nipples from the abrasiveness of most clothing materials.
• Breast Noises – A somewhat embarrassing aspect of recovery from breast implant surgery are the squeaks, gurgles and other noises that emanate from the implants. These noises are caused by air bubbles or fluid buildup as well as when the implants have yet to settle down. You will be rid of these noises in a few weeks, hopefully.

You must also follow the doctor’s directions about taking your medications regularly, eating a healthy diet, getting sufficient rest and engaging in light exercise. As cliché as it sounds, your faster recovery from breast implant surgery largely depends on how well the doctor’s orders are being followed on your end. In this line, you also have to care for your breast implant incisions by keeping them dry, clean and free from substances that can cause inflammation.

What to Look Out For

However, even with good care, you may experience certain complications that necessitate a trip to the emergency room. You must never hesitate to do so as your health is obviously at stake. These red flags include:

•	Blood in the urine, feces and saliva
•	Sudden and severe swelling, bruising and discoloration
•	Skin blackening
•	Loss of consciousness
•	Temperatures over 100 degree Fahrenheit
•	Convulsions

These health conditions can delay your recovery from breast implant surgery, yes, but you must not be discouraged. Many of these symptoms can be remedied by medications and medical care in a hospital setting, when necessary.

Where to Recover

You have many choices in the places to recover after the surgical procedure. The most important criteria are that the place must be comfortable, convenient and clean as well as that there are other people who can provide caregiver services during the time you are still largely indisposed. You may spend your recovery from breast implant surgery period in your home, licensed recovery facility, hotel and, most common, in the hospital albeit only for an overnight stay assuming that there are no serious complications.

During the time from when you were discharged from the hospital to the time you can return to your normal activities, you must take great care to lead a healthy lifestyle especially where cigarettes and alcohol are concerned. Indeed, you may even discover that your recovery from breast implant surgery has made you into a healthier version of yourself because of these lifestyle changes.

From the perspective of the plastic surgeon, the breast implant procedure can either be very simple or very complex depending on the physical condition of the patient as well as her desired results. The main aim, of course, is to come up with breast implants that look natural to the eyes, feel soft to the touch and move in the right way, all without leaving visible scars.

Before the Surgery

The decision to undergo a breast implantation procedure is a major one. You have to undergo a series of consultations with the plastic surgeon and his staff to determine your suitability for the surgery on many aspects from your physical condition and mental readiness to your financial capability. You must also decide on the size, shape and type of breast implants that, in turn, will determine the location and incision during the surgery.

Before the breast implant procedure, you will be asked by your doctor to adopt certain short-term lifestyle changes that will lessen the risks and complications of surgery. Although the following pre-operative recommendations are general in nature, you must strictly follow whatever the plastic surgeon says must be done in your particular case. Keep in mind that you are one-half of the team that will make your surgery successful in more ways than one.

•	Ten days before the scheduled surgery, you must stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin. These medications act as blood thinners that make the surgery dangerous.
•	Two months before the procedure, you absolutely have to stop smoking as it delays the healing process.
• A week before the surgery, you have to fill the prescriptions needed after the procedure. This way, you will avoid running to the pharmacy with your new breasts still in their healings stages.

Even in cases when the breast implant procedure is done on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home a few hours after the surgery, you must make arrangements for a relative or a friend to drive you home.

During the Surgery

Your doctor will often walk through your pre-operative procedures, which are mainly adopted to ensure that you are comfortable, safe and ready for the surgery. These procedures will include the administration of local or general anesthesia through injections or intravenous methods depending on your particular case. The area to be operated on may also be prepped by cleaning and shaving it.

During the actual breast implant procedure, your surgeon will cut an incision in the breast, armpit or navel depending on the type of implants used – one incision per implant. You and others will often not see the scars from the incision as these are very small, not to mention placed in clever areas like the folds of the armpit or under the crease of the breast.

Once the incision has been created, your plastic surgeon will then cut a path through the tissues along the way until the final destination of the breast implant has been reached. Along said path, the tissues and/or muscles will be separated to create the pocket in which the breast implant will be positioned. The choice of either the tissue or the muscle being separated depends on the type of placement desired.

The success of the breast implant procedure largely rests on the hands of the plastic surgeon especially in terms of creating symmetry in the new breasts. There is simply no foolproof way to predict beforehand the appearance of the breasts once the implants have been inserted. Thus, your doctor will often perform other procedures to ensure that the breast implants will look as natural as possible, said procedures of which can include nipple repositions, cleavage adjustments and crease creation.

Depending on your case, the standard breast implant procedure can also be accompanied by other surgical operations. These additional procedures are designed to make your new breasts look like better, larger and perkier versions of their own selves. Your surgeon may perform a breast lift surgery to ensure that everything from the crease to the nipples is in their pretty places.

Also, sizers may be placed inside the pockets just to test the implant placement, size and fill levels. When you surgeon is satisfied that your breasts will look just fine, these sizers are then removed and the permanent implant finally positioned in the pocket. Although this may lengthen the duration of the breast implant procedure, you will want them just so the final result will be to everybody’s liking. Well, at least, where you and your plastic surgeon are concerned, that is.

Just for purposes of discussion, your plastic surgeon may decide to adopt one of the following incisions during the operation. The choice will depend on a variety of factors including the type of implants used, the results desired and the physical condition of the patient.

•	Inframammary – The incision is placed below the crease of the breast. This breast implant procedure is the most commonly used because of its main benefit of maximum access resulting in more precise placement of the implant. On the downside, you may have to deal with thicker and, hence, more visible scars.
•	Periareolar – As its name suggests, the incision is made along the areola’s border. Although it makes for less visible scars, the higher risks of capsular contractions and difficulties with breastfeeding must be carefully weighed.
• Transaxillary – The incision is at the armpits, thus, there are no visible scars on the breasts. Your plastic surgeon must be very skilled, however, as it also poses the highest risk for asymmetrical implantation.
•	Transumbilical – This is a less common breast implant procedure where the incision is in the navel area. Again, there are no visible breast scars but the difficulty of passing the implant from the navel to the breast makes it less preferred among surgeons. A similar procedure is the transabdominoplasty.

Indeed, you have to discuss the breast implant procedure that will be performed on your body. If possible, you may even want to see a video of the operation including the results.

Like most surgical operations, doctors and their patients must undergo initial consultations prior to the procedure itself. These professional discussions are designed to clarify certain matters weighing on the minds of both parties. While the doctor wants to ascertain the readiness of the patient in undergoing the operation, the patient desires to ask questions related to everything before, during and after the procedure. This is exactly what the breast implant consultation between patient and plastic surgeon aims to achieve.

During such pre-operative consultations, you have every right to ask the plastic surgeon about matters related to the breast implantation scheduled in the future. You must be ready in the mental aspect to undergo the procedure simply because breast augmentation involves both your physical body and your psychological ego. With the changes that come with your body, you can expect changes in the way that you think of yourself but before it happens, you must know what to expect.

Your expectations must be sufficiently realistic based on the answers to the following questions asked during the initial breast implant consultation. Indeed, many women have had high expectations of breast augmentation beyond what the present techniques, tools and technology to offer mainly because these questions were not asked and answers were not provided.

Questions to Ask About the Surgeon

The first order of questions must be about the professional credentials of the plastic surgeon. You are, after all, entrusting your body and possibly your life to this doctor and, thus, it is only right that you ask about his capability and competence with the breast implantation procedure. In fact, many women will conduct background checks on the plastic surgeons in the area before going in for an initial breast implant consultation with the medical professional possessing the desired credentials.

Still, the following questions must be asked of the plastic surgeon during said breast implant procedure:

•	What are your professional credentials and certifications?
•	How long have you been performing the operation?
•	How many breast augmentation procedures do you conduct in a month?
•	How many revisions have you done on your own work?
•	Can you refer me to a couple of your patients for their testimonies?

Basically, you want to determine the education, training and experience of the plastic surgeon from the first get-go. Your choice of a plastic surgeon can make or break your new breasts, literally.

Questions About the Breast Implant Itself

The next set of questions that must be asked during the breast implant consultation pertains to the breast implant itself. Keep in mind that all implants have inherent risks for post-surgery complications like inflammations and infections. You want assurance that the breast implants used will pose the least amount of risks and the most number of benefits, naturally.

•	What type, size and manufacturer of breast implant do you prefer and why?
•	What warranties are there for the breast implants including rupture?
•	What breast size is best for my frame? Why?
•	Will you be able to accommodate smaller or larger than standard (less than 240cc or more than 800cc) breast implants?
•	Will you also recommend a breast lift in addition to the breast implant?

Questions About Surgical Techniques

The initial breast implant consultation is also the best time to ask about the surgical techniques used. As can be expected, you want to known exactly what will happen to your body as well as ask for the technique with the least post-surgical pain, visible scars and other risks. You also want to know other procedures that may possibly be done on your breasts.

•	Will I also be undergoing a breast life? Why or why not?
• What type of incisions will be used for the implantation procedure? Why? Discussion of the merits and demerits of the incision as against other types must be made.
•	Where will the breast implants be placed – under or over muscle? Why?
•	Do you offer complete submuscular placement? Why or why not?
•	Will the scars show?

Questions on the Risks, Contraindications, and Complications

The questions about the possible risks and complications of the chosen breast implants and its implantation techniques must also be discussed during the breast implant consultation for obvious reasons. You want to be mentally ready to endure these side effects and, better yet, to help in your own recovery by strictly following the post-surgery contraindications. Take note that many of the risks and complications of breast implants arise from the patient’s own negligence in strictly following doctor’s orders.

•	What are the possible breast implantation risks and complications?
•	What can I do to prevent capsular contracture, rupture and other problems?
•	How often do the abovementioned problems happen in your practice?
•	If these problems do happen, will the doctor cover the costs of correction?
• What are the possible inconveniences that I may have to endure with the breast implants? Is a mammogram still possible without risk of rupture?
•	What can I do before the operation that will lessen the chances for these risks and complications?

The pre-surgery breast implant consultation must also include answers to matters related to the things that must be done before the surgery to reduce the chances for these risks and complications. You should also ask about special equipment – surgical bras and medical supplies, for example – necessary to aid in your faster recovery. We cannot overemphasize the importance of going on the operating table with as much information as possible, which the breast implant consultation will be able to provide. Other questions that must be asked include the following:

•	What kind of results can I expect?
•	How long can I expect to stay in the hospital after the operation? How long will it take me to recover completely and return to my normal routine?
•	What are the total financial costs for the procedure? Do remember that breast implantation usually not covered by medical insurance.

We suggest going into the breast implant consultation with a checklist of these questions so that nothing can be forgotten.

Throughout history, breasts have occupied an important place in the human consciousness. Breasts have alternately been perceived as the nurturer and destroyer of man, as the object of lust and of hate, and as a subject of beauty. In modern times, breasts were equated with femininity so much so that the bigger these female mammary glands are, the more beautiful the woman was perceived to be. Indeed, breast implant history is closely associated to the pursuit of beauty, symmetry and femininity in its highest form.

Timeline of History

Contrary to the popular notion that breast implants are the inventions of the 1990s, thanks to the prevalence of women with these implants, these tools of beauty were first introduced in 1890. The first materials used was paraffin wax and has, since then, progressed into varied materials like ivory, ground rubber, ox cartilage, polymers, polyethylene and, of course, saline and silicone. Indeed, we have come a long way from the paraffin injections with their fatal complications to the saline implants with their medical safety combined with symmetrical beauty.

To make understanding of breast implant history easier on the mind, so to speak, we have arranged a timeline. Keep in mind that with each failed attempt at excellent breast implants, lessons have learned and we are still learning more about breast implants and, thus, their history is still being made to this day.

• 1890s - Gersuny performed the first known surgical breast augmentation procedures using paraffin injections. Because lumps formed in the breasts, infections were all too common. It was only in the 1920s when paraffin injections were dropped in surgeon’s office because of the high risks.
• 1920s – Fatty tissue replaced the paraffin injections, which incidentally was a dark mark in breast implant history. The fat was surgically removed from the buttocks and belly, which was then transferred to the breasts. Although this was safer than paraffin injections, the downside was that the fat was eventually reabsorbed into the body. The result was lopsided and lumpy breasts.
• 1940s – Fat transplants were abandoned in favor of flap-based augmentation. Basically, the chest wall tissue is rotated into the breast, thus, adding volume.
• 1950s – Polyvinyl sponges were implanted into the breasts. The complications were also plenty including the sponges shrinking and then hardening within a year, not to mention the high risks for infections and cancer.
• 1960s – The decade saw a turning point in breast implant history. Silicone injections were directly injected into the breasts, which resulted in firmer, perkier and larger breasts. However, the complications like chronic inflammation, uneven bumps and festering infections caused silicone injections to fall out of favor.
• 1980s – The silicone breast implants were now very popular although many low points were also experienced by the industry. Such low points culminated in the settlement of a class action suit against Dow Corning, one of the largest manufacturers of silicone breast implants. About 170,000 women were awarded with a total of $3.2 billion dollars for damages incurred due to these implants including rupture and contraction. Silicone implants have since been withdrawn from the market.
• 1990s – During the 1990s, widely considered a good part of breast implant history, only the saline-filled implants are allowed in the United States general market for cosmetic breast enhancement and augmentation. The silicone breast implants are only available through FDA-approved trials for special patients. In 1995, soybean oil implants were introduced although it must be noted that these were never approved in the United States and were subsequently withdrawn.
• 2000s – It was only in 2006 when silicone breast implants were once again made available in the United States. This time, the new implants are the so-called gummy bear style (cohesive gel). In the decades-long breast implant history, these silicone implants appear to be the most beneficial since these do not leak even when ruptured; hold their shape longer and better; and feel more natural to the touch sans the occasional sloshing sounds of saline breast implants.

We must emphasize that gummy bear implants have been used in Europe for more than a decade – since the 1990s – but these have only been approved for use in the United States just recently. At present, these breast implants are the most popular choices for women because of their ability to hold their shapes for a longer period of time. You will observe reviews from both surgeons and consumers that gummy bear implants are less likely to ripple, wrinkle, shift and fold.

Indeed, the gummy bear implants are one of the major developments in breast implant history. Their disadvantages like increased risk of scarring and limited incision placement options have often been overlooked since these are minor compared to the advantages.

The Future of Breast Implants

As previously mentioned, the breast implant history is still an ongoing process. At present, breast augmentation is still the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States for obvious reasons. Although the number of women undergoing breast augmentation has decreased in recent years mainly because of the economic recession, it is still the most desired and the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure among women.

Yet another high point in breast implant history is the introduction of the hydrogel implants, which is a pre-filled implant made from saline-based polymer gel. Its main benefits are lesser interference in mammograms, softer feel and complete excretion from the body. You must discuss with your doctor about the options available in breast implants as there are always complications associated with surgical cosmetic procedures albeit in different degrees.

Modern medical science continues to shape the breast implant history. With advances in technology, techniques and materials, we may yet in our lifetime see the advent of breast implants that cause very little to no scarring, risks and complications before, during and after surgery. We may be willing to pay the price of beauty in terms of financial, emotional and physical costs but not to the extent of putting our lives in danger. And so, we must choose the type of implant, method of implantation and plastic surgeon well but that’s for another discussion.

It is a wonder how successful breast implant surgeries can give women the confidence and self-esteem that they needed to gain more positive outlook in their lives. In addition to the procedure’s visible results, what’s more important is how the implants have transformed the lives of so many women. But even after going through the healing process after surgery, care is essential in maintaining ideal breast augmentation results. As much as maintenance is essential in keeping your shiny car in top notch running condition, proper breast implant maintenance is also essential in continually enjoying the results of breast implants.

Bra

Now that you have a new pair of breasts, it is important for you to pair it up with a proper fitting and supportive bra. This is to prevent the implants from sagging. A proper fitting bra must never be an option, especially to women with implants, as it prevents the breasts from sagging and provides ample support to the back and shoulders. If a certain bra doesn’t fit, its brand rides up your back, if your breasts always tend to fall out your bra when you bend or if it bags the nipple area, then you are wearing the wrong bra. After all the hard work of giving yourself perfectly enhanced breasts, you need to invest on a good bra to care of them.

Implant Massages

In general, surgeons instruct their patients to do breast implant massages and compression exercises to maintain their softness or to keep them from hardening. Such exercises basically involve pushing of the implant to the outermost corners of the pocket at several times in succession. Move them up and down, side to side; hold them in position for a few seconds. These exercises will prevent the tissue for tightening around the implant. Regularly doing these exercises minimizes the risk of developing capsular contracture or scar tissue around the implant.

Your Breast Health

Following the recommended screening guidelines for post-operative care is essential in minimizing the risk of developing complications. For instance, undergoing the prescribed mammograms and breast examinations is important in following proper breast implant maintenance. Every three years, women who are in their 20s and 30s must routinely undergo breast exams, which are performed by health professionals. After the age of 40, undergoing annual mammogram screening is imperative. This routine checkup applies to women with or without implants. Discuss with your surgeon the necessity of doing MRIs for further breast health care.

In case of necessary Dental Work

Women with breast implants need to pre-medicate with antibiotics before having necessary dental works done. This is to take care of the plaque and bacteria that might be released into the bloodstream and increase the risk of developing infection or other complications with your implants. Once the bacteria reach the bloodstream, it is likely to target foreign bodies like your breast implants.

Possible complications

Being wary of these possible complications is included in the practice of proper breast implant maintenance. Since no surgery is 100% safe, you need to always be prepared to handle elements of risks. For breast implant procedures, complications and risks include infection, side effects of anesthesia or post-operative medications, capsule contracture, necrosis, implant deflation, hematoma and general loss of sensation in the nipples. Side effects like feeling tired and sleepy all the time, depression and irritability is normal with people who are taking painkillers. Capsule contracture is the formation of capsule or tissues around the implant, and can be prevented with routine breast implant exercises. Although not a common with breast implant surgeries, necrosis is described as tissue death, which prevents wound healing. 10 to 18 % of women who underwent breast implant surgeries experience loss of sensation in the nipples. Depending on your breast implant fill, implant deflation may occur the first year after the surgery. Hematoma is that unsightly blood clot that forms out leaking blood vessels and skin tissue damage. To minimize the risks for these complications, be wary of their initial signs. Never hesitate to talk with your surgeon about your post-operative care.

Caution

Proper breast implant maintenance is extremely important in continually enjoying the benefits and excellent results of breast implant surgeries. Proper post-operative care is helpful in ruling out additional surgeries for necessary implant corrections. It will save you from the aches, pains, discomforts and expenses of dealing with complications, which can ruin your perfectly enhanced breasts. In general, breast implant maintenance cost additional money. When this procedure is not usually covered by health insurance, you need to financially ready to face the demands of breast implant care.

As years go by, manufacturers have refined silicone implants and created a more cohesive and generally better silicone implant version that is popularly known as the Gummy Bear breast implants.

What is Gummy Bear?

Cohesive silicone or Gummy Bear has recently become the popular choice for breast implant material because of its softer, safer, longer lasting and more natural qualities. Thousands of women have already experienced first-hand the benefits of Gummy Bear breast implants over other implant options. Despite the enthusiasm of international patients to cohesive silicone implants, they still have very limited use in the United States. Today, these implants are only available to limited numbers of patients who are fortunate enough to participate in its clinical trials.

Background

Gummy Bear breast implants were created in early 1990s. It was invented to serve two main purposes. One, it was created to answer to the need for longer lasting breast implants. Two, it was created to give patients the option to use implants with better capacity to maintain shape over time. Prior to its broad use in the United States, the food and Drug Administration is still in the process of performing large-scale studies on the effect of cohesive silicone implants. The tests and trials involve a rigorous guideline and scrutiny to fully determine all the possible issues that the American public might experience with this type of breast implant.

Types of Gummy Bear Implants

Similar to conventional silicone implants, Gummy Bear breast implant also come in various shapes and textures. Anatomically shaped cohesive silicone gel implants are designed to project breasts more at the bottom than on the top. This way, the implants gradually and naturally feathers into the upper chest, which explains its more natural look. Round cohesive gel implants are already available in Europe, but not in the United States. Its shape looks like an M&M that is lying on its side. Even if you hold them upright, true cohesive silicone gel creates a dome-like and relatively protruding shape, which is why only limited number of women uses this shape of Gummy Bear breast implants.

When it comes to texture, cohesive gel silicone implants are textured to increase friction on its surface. This should prevent the implants from rotating.

Advantages of Gummy Bear breast implants

For ten years, cohesive silicone gel or Gummy Bears have been used in breast augmentation procedures. In the United States, clinical trials have not yet matured. Hence, let us discuss the advantages of Gummy Bear implants in general sense.

In terms of shape, Gummy Bears are better able to maintain their shape upon the breast. Compared to non-stable fillers like saline and standard silicone gel implants, cohesive silicone implants do not easily submit to the effects of gravity. Its distinct shape will be imparted on the visible shape of the breast, which in turn ensures longer lasting shape and better overall breast augmentation results.

Since the implants have textured surfaces, it resists folds and rippling. It does not easily shift from one area of the shell to another, which often leads to the collapse of implant materials. In this light, there is less likelihood for patients to undergo corrective surgeries with Gummy Bears.

Based on the European experience on Gummy Bear breast implants, firm scar tissues are uncommon with the implants. Since the implants have lesser diffusion of silicone, it is firmer and it better able to inhibit the body from contracting around it.

Lastly, the cohesive structure of Gummy Bear implants is guaranteed not to leak. In the event that it ruptures, the implant can hold itself together. Compared to the original silicone implants, the Gummy Bear generation has thicker outer shell and thicker consistency that is less likely to leak. This makes it difficult for the outer shell to break. By observation, if the outer shell of the implant is removed, the cohesive gel filler does not deform or warp. It maintains its shape. The case may be different if the rupturing of the outer shell occurred against the warmth of the body.

Who can have Gummy Bear breast implants?

In Europe, cohesive silicone gel implants are broadly used. However, the implants still have very limited use in the United States. Similar with standard silicone breast implants, Gummy Bears are ideal for women who are in good health and not pregnant or nursing. This is also a great option for women who are undergoing first time augmentation, breast reconstruction after mastectomy and revision of a breast augmentation procedure. In addition, women who choose to wear Gummy Bear breast implants must agree to participate in the full ten years of follow-up study conducted by the government to address objective medical issues.

Breast implant surgeries have been performed for more than 40 years. As years go by, improvements and refinement to the techniques and materials involved has made the procedure safer for most women. When it comes to breast implant options, saline breast implants seem to be the inferior alternative to silicone gel breast implants. Thanks to removal of silicone gel implants in the market in 1992 to 2006, saline implants have gained more confidence and acceptance among patients. Since 2000, the Food and drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of saline implants and was always been made available for breast augmentation procedures worldwide.

What are saline breast implants?

Saline implants are basically saline solutions in a sac. It makes use of a silicone elastomer shell that is surgically implanted under the chest tissues of muscle. During the procedure, a valve is used to fill the shell with the agreed amount of saltwater solution, which achieves significant improvements and increases to bust size. Although pre-filled saline implants are available, no pre-filled saline breast implants are approved by the FDA at this time.

Saline implants vary in shell surface. It is available in both smooth and textured varieties. Other features include shell thickness, shape and profile. Implant size ranges from 120 cc to 960 cc. patients who would like to go bigger than that would have to order for custom-made saline implants. The sterile saline solution used in the procedure must conform to the United States Pharmacopeia of Norma Physiological Saline. Common saline solutions used on breast implants have 0.12M concentration and a pH of 7.2 to 7.4.

Anatomy of Saline Breast Implants

Like the more popular standard silicone gel implants, saline breast implants offer greater varieties in terms of size, shape and texture. It makes use of smooth or textured casing, depending on the patient’s preferences. Unlike other implant materials, saline implants assumes more placement possibilities, which include subglandular or over the muscle, partial submuscular or partial muscle coverage and complete submuscular or underneath the muscle. The implants may also be placed using various types of incision including inframammary (the crease between the chest and breast), transaxillary (armpit), periareolar (nipple) or TUBA or belly button. One advantage that saline implants gain over silicone gel implants is that they require smaller and shorter incisions since they will be filled after placement. In addition, the size or shape of saline implants are easier to adjust or can be adjusted after surgery.

Results

In general, the main disadvantage of saline breast implants is their feel. Silicone implants achieves a naturally softer feel. In terms of ripple factor, care must be observed in maintaining saline implants. Rippling occurs only when the saline fill and elastic polymer shell of the implants interact with one another, resulting to a crepe-like skin. This emphasizes the importance of following the surgeon’s post-operative and implant maintenance instructions to the letter.

Current Issues

The main controversy behind saline breast implants is largely centered on the event that the implant shell ruptures. When a saline implant ruptures, it will simply deflate and cause a change in the size and shape of the breast. The saline solution that leaked through the implant membrane will be absorbed by the body without risks of serious complications. This makes saline implants safer than silicone. Ruptured standards silicone implants poses more serious health risks as they contain viscous silicone gel, which might be harmful to the health.

Are saline implants safe?

Apparently, the FDA maintains stringent rules on the standards upheld in the manufacture and practice of saline implants and saline implant surgeries. This government arm is consistent in keeping an eye on the quality assurance of saline implant manufacturers, which in a way assures the public that they will be given nothing but FDA-approved implants that are safe for general use. In addition, long-term follow-up studies regarding breast implants include saline implants. These are studies in which the researchers are assigned to look for evidences on the continued safety and effectiveness of breast implants. However, a thorough physical examination and evaluation is essential in ensuring satisfying results for saline implant surgeries.

When are saline implants more appropriate?

Silicone implants are more popular than saline implants but they are relatively more costly. However, there are cases when silicone implants are not the best option for breast augmentation. For instance, saline breast implants are recommended for women who have small size of discrepancy. Saline implants can give them more symmetrical breasts. Also, saline implants are less costly, yet equally effective. Women who have a lot of natural padding to cover usually turn to saline implants to reduce surgical costs.

Bottom line

The decision to use saline implants would depend on your body type, target increase in breast size and budget. In general, saline breast implants cost $1,000 less than silicone gel-filled implants. Although the option on which breast implant to choose is entirely personal, feel free to discuss your options with your surgeon.

Silicone breast implants are made from the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. Silicone is not only popularly used as breast implant material, but also a popular material for implants used in facial, joint and drainage system reconstruction. Actually, silicone is involved in many bodily functions. It has been the material used in constructing heart valve and other cardiovascular prostheses, in facilitating nerve regeneration and in treating scars and wrinkles. Silicone can easily adhere to the structure of the human body, which makes silicone breast implants soft and natural feeling. This perhaps explains why this material of breast implant is most popular among patients.

History and Development

Silicone breast implants were first marketed in 1960s. Silicone was then assumed as a biologically inactive element, which therefore have no capacity to cause harmful effects. However, by 1976, amendments to the Food and Drug Cosmetic Act have been done due to the cases of tissue disorder and cancers reported with silicone implants.

In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricted the use of silicone implants to controlled clinical trials. In the same year, the national Institutes of Health performed a follow-up study to fully determine the long-term effects of exposure to silicone implants. Both studies have shown that there is actually no association between breast implants and cancer. Aside from silicone implants, breast implant was not associated with any particular type of implant.

Finally, the FDA approved the use of silicone gel implants in November 17, 2006. The public can expect these implants to be determined as safe and effective. The public is also assured that the FDA will consistently monitor the quality and safety of silicone implants, as it requires implant manufacturers to do post-market studies that will answer the consumer’s many questions, particularly the risks of adverse effects.

Recent Development

More recently, there has been hype on newer silicone gel implants. Many women are monitoring the results of the Food and Drug Administration trials on cohesive silicone gel implants, otherwise known as Gummy Bear breast implants. This next generation silicone gel implants were designed to address the common issues on the quality of standard silicone. Gummy Bears are not loose. They are cohesive, which means that they will never lead in the event that the breast implant breaks. In addition, this form-stable version of silicon are more solid than liquid, which means that have can maintain more attractive, predictable and longer lasting form. Also, they are soft to touch, which allows them to achieve more natural results.

Is silicone safe?

Numerous studies have been conducted to determine the safety of using or wearing silicone breast implants. Many of these studies are localized to gain conclusive evidences against various complaints. However, results of such studies have failed to establish links that associate silicone gel implants with complications like cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic website, silicone breast implants or any particular type of breast implant do not increase the risk of breast cancer. They also do not answer to the weakened immune system, as there were no evidence gathered that the body reacts to breast implants the same way it reacts to foreign elements like bacteria and virus. However, it would be wise to follow your surgeon’s instructions to undergo tests like mammography to evaluate whether or not you are an ideal candidate for silicone breast implants.

Who should have silicone breast implants?

As of November 17, 2006, women of age 22 years and older can qualify for silicone breast implants. In general, silicone implants are not available for general use. Certain steps of medical evaluation need to be followed to ensure safe and satisfying breast augmentation results. Also, women who seek silicone breast implant surgery must have realistic expectations toward the procedure. Otherwise, there will be an increased likelihood that patients will decide to undergo revision surgery for corrections and further improvements. Also, women who underwent mastectomy and women with chest wall deformities are ideal candidates for silicone breast implants. The implants achieve excellent results in replacing and reconstructing the breast tissues that were removed due to cancer or trauma. Also, silicone implants are great alternatives among patients who seek corrective surgery due to unfavorable results with saline.

A good breast augmentation surgeon is one who can combine his surgical skills, technical skills and ethics in ensuring satisfying results and ensuring the well-being of his patients. Hence, being curious about the background, qualification and professional practice of your prospective surgeons is a good thing. As they will be given the responsibility to ensure success in your chosen breast augmentation procedure, they need to be certified, qualified, well trained, competent and well recommended by former patients. Hence, there are things that can help you gain confidence or reject the skills offered by a cosmetic surgeon.

Board Certification

A board certified breast augmentation surgeon is one who has undergone training and has completed all the qualifications and experience necessary for competent an ethical practice. Board certification, in many ways, serves as an assurance that a surgeon is capable of being insightful to your needs and is knowledgeable about the procedure that you seek. He is also one who is familiar and trained in using state-of-the-art equipment, appropriate techniques and proper judgment in evaluating or advising you about your breast enhancement options. In the United States, look for surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A breast augmentation surgeon may also earn certification from a specialty board called the American Board of Medical Specialties. Both certification boards require their members to have earned their degree from a reputable school, at least 5-year residency, surgical training in the plastic surgery field and meet the standard code of ethics.

Training

A licensed breast augmentation surgeon cannot call himself a plastic or cosmetic surgeon without having completed the corresponding training for such procedures. So when you are looking at the background of your chosen surgeon, look for his specialized training information, especially those that involve breast implants. Handling breast implants is a specialty skill that only those who had trained and underwent continuing education, classes and seminars are qualified to perform. In line with the surgeon’s board certification is the assurance that board certified surgeons undergo specific amount of training for breast augmentation procedures.

Hospital Privileges

Breast augmentation procedures are usually performed in a surgical center, practice-based surgical facility or hospital. Be wary of practice-based facilities are many of them are not accredited for breast surgery. Hence, when choosing a breast augmentation surgeon, make sure that he has operating privileges at an accredited, licensed and Medicare certified facility. Only the surgeons who have excellent education, training and general competency are granted such privilege.

Testimonials

Even before you buy a particular product, you tend to take hint from friends and acquaintances who already have tried such product. Similarly, before deciding on which surgeon to choose, consider doing your own research on his client feedback. Even board certified surgeons have flaws. When consulting your doctor, ask him to provide you with before and after pictures of his clients. Ask him about the experiences of his former clients. Better yet, seek the help and advice of your friends to give you a list of best reviewed breast augmentation surgeons. Although reviews are subjective, they help you make realistic expectations about your surgeon.

Certification and Membership

Between certification and membership, focus more on the surgeon’s certification. A board certified surgeon is bound to uphold the strict code of ethics that apply to his profession. Also, it requires its members to have the prescribed surgical training and minimum years of practice. Surgeons who have continued their education and training are bound to earn certifications for the field of specialization for which he was educated and trained to do. On the other hand, membership almost always covers all surgeons of all types. Certifying boards imposes stringent rules among its members, which in sense acts as a regulating body for professional and practicing surgeons.

Where to find a good breast augmentation surgeon

Check out the websites of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Consumer Guide to plastic Surgery: Plastic Surgeon Directory to get a list of qualities, certified and practicing breast augmentation surgeons. Take advantage of the free online service of the American Board of Medical Specialties website. Simply register and start working on your list to gain background information on your surgeons. Take your time in doing your research, as it would greatly influence the results of your pending breast augmentation surgery. For something that entails long-term implications, never rush your decision to choose a particular surgeon.

Breast enhancement, particularly breast implant surgery, has rapidly grown into a major area of cosmetic surgery. Along with the advancement and refinement of the technology and technique involved in such procedure is the continuous increase in the number of women deciding to give it a go. Though the decision to undergo breast augmentation aims to resolve a variety of personal issues, women decided to embrace it for a number of reasons.

Flat Chest

With the society’s obsession for fitness, proportion and aesthetics, flat chested women usually end up with low self-esteem. The decision to undergo surgery serves the purpose of compensating for the teen-sized breasts that they have. The reasonable deals and costs of breast implant surgeries gave women, who constantly fumble their way through padded bras, silicon cutouts and other falsies, the chance to make their breasts look bigger. When there is a variety of options for breast implant materials, shape and textures, women can now afford to achieve the perfect breasts that they wanted.

Size

When it comes to breasts, size matters. Breast implant surgeries are designed to resolve issues on breast sizes. Depending on the shape and texture that you wish to achieve, implants can easily contour your breasts to your liking. It allows you to go skip one to 2 cup sizes. It allows you the convenience of having the power to wear the right size and proportioned breasts that will amp up your confidence.

Clothes

Many times, women with smaller breasts or busts complain experiencing difficulties in finding the right fitting dress to wear. Small breasts basically result from an anomaly in your natural anatomy. Hence, the decision to undergo breast implant surgery can give your body the right proportion that can make you look more attractive. In this sense, looking for the right fitting clothes that fit the rest of your body will be easier.

Breast Cancer

Women who have breast cancer are sometimes compelled to have a portion of a breast or a whole breast removed in line with treatment. As part of the reconstruction procedures, these women may decide to undergo breast implant surgery. Loss of a breast or portion of a breast definitely has a significant impact to the confidence of any woman. Hence, in the process of rebuilding her body, physically and emotionally, undergoing the surgery can significantly reduce the likelihood of patients being self-conscious when dealing with people. Implants can achieve a natural look that will make their bosoms look the way they were before cancer.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry is a natural breast issue. Women naturally have asymmetrical breasts. However, severe asymmetry problems can result from congenital deformities. If one of your breasts is two or 3 cups larger or smaller than the other, there is a good reason for you to consider breast implant surgery. Achieving a more flattering figure is now easier and safer to achieve. The decision to undergo surgery to achieve this purpose helps women move on with their lives without the hassles of being too self-conscious.

Breast Shape

Factors like deformities, age, pregnancy and breastfeeding can severely alter the shape of your breast. To get back your round and full breasts, undergoing surgery can contour your breasts into their pre-pregnancy or pre-aging state. When it comes to shape, it always comes between the decision to have round breast implants or teardrop breast implants. Round implants are ideal for breasts that turned into a flattened sphere and teardrop implants are ideal for breasts that needed to attain gently sloping contour.

Weight Loss

Women who have just recently worked hard to attain their goal weight may have to deal with issues like seemingly deflated breasts. In this light, the decision to undergo breast implant surgery is helpful in giving your new body the right proportion and shape. With all your lose skin, it is highly likely that your breasts do not correspond to your body type. Hence, the procedure can effectively give you a well-proportioned and more normal look.

Mommy Makeover

Sometimes, droopy and saggy breast can get in the way of a mother’s confidence and well-being. All those years of bearing children and breastfeeding plus gravity may have taken their toll on her young body. Among the combinations of breast enhancement procedures that she can undergo is a breast implant surgery. It is hard enough to keep up with the demands of motherhood. It only gets harder when it goes along with personal issues like low self-esteem and low self-confidence due to unwanted changes to the body. These points usually motivate a mother to decide to undergo a breast augmentation.

Reminder

Whatever your reasons may be in undergoing breast augmentation surgery, it is important to find yourself a good surgeon. His extensive training and experience will not only guarantee satisfying results, but also the best chance for your procedure to resolve whatever issue you may be dealing with.

Having small breasts or flat chest can severely hurt a woman’s confidence.

Aside from serving aesthetic reasons, women who are physically attractive are more likely to land jobs or get promoted from their jobs. The truth behind these statements is shown by the ever-growing popularity of surgical breast enhancement.

However, just like any other popular cosmetic procedure, breast enhancement has its own set of pitfalls, which many are uncomfortable settling with. In addition, there are women who are rendered unqualified candidates for breast implants due to pre-existing health conditions.

Luckily, women who do not have the money, right state of health and courage to face the risks and pain of surgery, there are breast implant alternatives that may deliver some results.

Breast Enhancement Pills

Women who wanted to shy away from the hassles of breast implants look at breast enhancement pills as an alternative. These pills contain natural ingredients with breast enhancing properties. Most pills contain powerful combinations of fennel seed, fenugreek, dong quai root, dandelion root, kelp and watercress.

The potent phytoestrogens in these herbs have shown qualities that bind estrogen receptors in mammary tissues, which stimulate growth and significant increase in breast size. Although the results vary from woman to woman, ideal results include fuller and firmer breasts. Also, these pills deliver other benefits like reduction of water weight gain and relief to the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and menopause.

Breast Enlargement Cream

Breast enlargement cream is a breast enhancement option with very little or anecdotal evidence of efficacy in achieving significant increases in bust size. Similar to breast enhancing pills, breast creams also incorporate natural herb ingredients like black cohosh, wild yam, burdock root, fenugreek and kelp. Although this cosmetic product is very popular, it usually lacks the delivery system that is necessary in easing its stimulating extracts across the layers of the skin.

Fat Injections

Instead of dealing with breast implants, cosmetic surgeons have found a way to use fats from your buttocks, thigh and other body regions that has fats as filler for small breasts and flat chests.

This procedure is also known as the autologous fat transplantation. The procedure involved liposuction and injection of fats into the breasts (micro-lipoinjection). Unlike breast implants, fats are more easily accepted by your body than silicone or saline breast implant fills. However, there is a risk that lumps, deformation and rough texture may result from this procedure. As years went by, fat injection procedures underwent refinement.

Today, the renewed interest in this technique made patients believe that is somewhat better than saline or silicone filled implants. In truth, fat, silicone and saline fillers all have similar risks of infection and side effects. Apparently, when saline and silicone implants already gained recommendations from top surgeons, fat injection has not yet been recommended by any known cosmetic surgeon.

Exercise

When breast contains fat cells and no muscles, exercise can never increase breast size. However, a reducing diet combined with breast enhancing routines can make your bust line look bigger. Exercises like bench presses and push-ups can tone up your backup chest line, making it appear more prominent, which creates an illusion of having bigger breasts.

Various types of bench press and push-up exercises like pec press, butterfly press, wall ups and pectoral push-ups are helpful and effective in increasing the dimension of your breasts. Hence, aside from maintaining a well-toned and shapely body, women have other goals for going to the gym.

At-home Breast Enhancement Tips and Tricks

Simple tricks can make you look bust line look bigger than it actually is. You can call a gel-filled bra or a bra-lift your best friend during events when you need to look your best.

Without the aches and pains of surgery, special bras can be used to give your breasts its needed lift, making you look bustier and shapelier. Cutlet shaped silicone gels are also tricky in enhancing the shape and size of your breasts. Wear them on the strategic portions of your breast and under your clothes and you can instantly see results.

Also, a good posture is a big help when it comes to natural breast enhancement as it helps push out your breasts, giving them better shape. Clothing styles and details like horizontal stripes and accessories can visually enhance your bust or cleavage area.

Reminder

In truth, no true breast implant alternative can achieve the results given by breast implants in terms of size and shape enhancement. Although implant surgery has hassles like high cost and minimal health risks, thanks to more refined techniques and filling materials, it gives the best guarantee for making your breasts bigger. Most of the time, patients are scared of breast implant surgery for the wrong reasons. Hence, it is important to consult a well-trained and qualified cosmetic surgeon to fully discuss your breast enhancement options.

Breast implant and breast augmentation surgery is among the popular cosmetic procedures sought by women. When breast size and shape greatly influence confidence and self-esteem, the decision to undergo breast augmentation becomes a very personal issue. However, this procedure is not always appropriate for every woman. Even with the emergence of modern and sophisticated tools, the procedure may not be a good idea to some individuals. There are considerations that need to be taken to ensure successful and satisfying results. One of which is whether or not the patient is right for the procedure.

Who undergoes breast augmentation?

A diverse group of women decide to undergo breast augmentation for a number of reasons. Women who feel that their breast size is small and inadequate and women with unsightly asymmetrical breasts often decide to undergo this procedure to correct their defect. Other reasons for undergoing the procedure is reduced firmness of breasts due to aging and drooping or sagging breasts after child bearing or breastfeeding. Cancer patients who have partially or totally removed their breasts undergo the procedure for reconstruction purposes. Although the social attitudes about breast augmentation procedures are complex, the decision mainly serves the sense of self-esteem and wholeness of the patients.

What makes a good candidate?

A generally healthy and non-smoking woman can safely enhance her breast through breast augmentation procedures. However, there are more specific considerations that must be taken to make sure that a patient is capable of undergoing the procedure with near zero risk of complication. First, a good candidate is one with the intention of improvement, not perfection. She must be fully and thoroughly aware of the options, risks and benefits of breast augmentation procedure that she seeks. Since the results are permanent, she must be prepared to cope with the demands of postoperative care as well as the possibility of additional surgeries over time. More importantly, she must be an emotionally well-adjusted individual who is in good health and observes regular physical fitness and healthy diet regimen. A candidate needs to understand that the procedure is meant to enhance her figure, and not to perfect or completely change it, to be able to form realistic expectations.

Factors that may affect the decision to undergo breast augmentation.

Motivation is the main driving force behind every decision to undergo any cosmetic surgeries. With breast augmentation, breast implants or breast reconstruction procedures usually serve very personal reasons. In this light, it must be a personal decision and not a decision that is forced on anyone.

Psychological factors also affect one’s decision to undergo breast augmentation. However, an ideal candidate is one that does not tie her self-worth in her body. The main purpose and scope of the procedure is to enhance breast size and shape, and not to make self-esteem and self-confidence a commodity.

Cosmetic procedures are generally expensive. Hence, one must be prepared to shell out around $20,000 to $12,000. When breast augmentation costs an average total of $5,500, one must not overlook the cost of post-operative care, which includes necessary prescription medications and post-op compression garments.

Ultimately, the doctor is the one to decide whether it is safe for you to undergo the procedure. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your body and check your bone structure as well as the amount of tissue and skin on your chest area. If your body is rendered able to safely accommodate the breast implants without damage, you can proceed in discussing the enhancement procedure you seek.

In case of doubt, patients are advised to delay the procedure until such time that they have more time to think about it. Breast augmentation is a major decision that must not be rushed. One must have enough time to deliberate the options and risks involved. Hence, it is easier and better to change your mind before the surgery rather than afterwards.

Certain medical conditions may render any patient unqualified to undergo breast augmentation. Cardiovascular problems and blood disorders never go well with the procedure. Also, people who are taking medication must discuss their regimen with their chosen surgeon before going under the knife. Habits like smoking are bad for someone who wanted to undergo the procedure. Smoking clogs the arteries and thins the blood vessels, and tends to increase the risk of complications during surgery.

Hints for a successful breast augmentation surgery

Honesty is essential in ensuring a successful breast augmentation surgery. Honestly discussing your habits, medical history or pre-existing medication conditions and health regimen with your surgeon is crucial to minimizing the risks of complications and risks of suffering post-operative problems. Choose an experienced surgeon with the right training and qualification to get the best advice on how to make you a good candidate for the procedure, which ensures satisfying outcomes.

Breast sizes and shapes matter. As the most definitive part of a woman’s body, the size and shape of one’s breasts is almost always connected to her grace, self-confidence and beauty. Natural breast sizes and shapes are actually dependent on the support of the ligaments located at the base of the breasts. Actually, breasts are an organ of fatty connective tissues that are bonded by a layer of skin. The proportion and adherence of this organ to your body mostly affect its density, shape and position on your chest.

Breast cup sizes

Stand straight and wrap a tape measure around your rib care and under your bust. Make sure that the tape is firm but not tight. This should give you your band measurement. Now, wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust. This should give you your cup measurement. Now, round up your band measurement to the nearest even number and add five to it. Now, get the difference between this number and your cup measurement. If the difference is less than an inch, then your cup size is A. If the difference is 2 inches, then your cap size is B. Differences of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 inches correspond to cup sizes B, C, D, DD, E, F, and G respectively.

Shapes of breast

In general, no two women have identical breast shape. Factors like genes, diet, climate and regionalism influences the shape of women’s breasts. However, breast shape are classified broadly into perfect breasts, swooping breasts, saggy breasts, small breasts, constricted or tubular breasts, augmented breasts and pigeon breasts.

The perfect breast shape is described to be one with nipple that points outwards and parallel to the ground. It is supple and well-toned and shows no signs of sagging. Breasts that bend slightly inwards and with nipples that point upwards are swooping breasts. Saggy or ptotic breasts are basically dropping breasts with nipples that point downward. Small breasts, as the name implies, are one with very little volume of fatty tissues and small nipples and areolas in them. Tubular breasts, otherwise known as constricted breasts, are cylindrical, tubular and narrow breasts with small base. This is actually a defective breast shape, which result from hernia in the breast tissue. A severe condition of tubular breasts is called augmented breasts. Lastly, pigeon breasts or pectus carinatum are severely deformed breasts that almost lie flat on the chest.

How to achieve ideal breast sizes and shapes

Your perception of ideal breast sizes and shapes basically depend on your individual taste. It depends on the look that you wanted to achieve for yourself. And to achieve your ideal bust line, you need to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to gain a realistic advice on how to enhance your breast shape and adjust your breast size.

On breast implants

Breast implant surgery answers to the women’s need to adjust their breast sizes and shapes towards achieving toned and perfectly shaped lines. Depending on the client’s preferences, the procedure may be combined with breast lift to achieve fully satisfactory results. In this light, a board-certified, experienced and rigorously educated surgeon is invaluable in guiding you through your decisions on how much breast sizes you want to go and which shape fits you better without ruining the proper proportions for your body frame and skin texture.

The total breast implant cost could range from $5,000 to $15,000 USD. This cost includes your consultation fee, surgeon’s fee, implants used, anesthesia, operating facility fee and other miscellaneous fees. Average cost of implants ranges from $1,000 to $1,300. Anesthesia costs around $600 to $1,000. Facility fee varies from $800 to $1,200. The remaining cost would be the surgeon’s fee as well as other charges related to your pre and post-operative care. As you consult your surgeon about your total breast implant cost, make sure that it does not only include his fee but everything that you will use and need as you undergo the procedure.

Factors that affect breast implant cost

The cost of living of the area of the clinic or hospital in which you plant to have your breast augmentation done will influence your breast implant cost. For instance, in New York and California where the cost of living is high, plastic surgery rates are expensive. This is because the overhead is higher in this area. In addition, surgeons have greater demand in these areas than in rural areas.

Similarly, surgeon’s fee fluctuates from region to region and from practice to practice. In general, it is the surgeon’s skill and training that basically determines the cost of his cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgeons who have extensive experience and expertise on breast augmentation usually command higher fees. As you decide which surgeon to consult or perform breast enhancement on you, consider checking his background. Using a board-certified surgeon does not guarantee best results, but choosing one who has undergone specific and rigorous surgical education and experience on breast surgeries can beat the odds of ensuring successful outcomes. Apparently out of the 150 certification boards for surgeons, only a handful of surgeons are designated by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Regardless of your total breast implant cost, it is important to make sure that your surgeon is qualified to do the job.

Another factor that influences breast implant cost is the extent of procedure. There are a number of breast implant procedures and each type has specifications that impacts the total cost of your operation. For instance, the type of anesthesia and implant technique used will definitely show on your bill.

The type of fill in your implants has something to do with your total breast implant cost. Based on the 2008 report of the American Society for Plastic Surgery, silicone gel implants cost around $3,885 and saline implants cost an average of $3,603

Medications and supplies used for your pre and post-operative care, which include pain relievers, antibiotics, surgical dressings, topical medications, blood tests and laboratory fees and exams, is also covered in your total breast implant cost.

How about insurance coverage?

If the procedure follows a mastectomy or severe breast trauma, insurance companies may cover your breast implant cost. However, if your breast implant or breast augmentation is purely an elective cosmetic procedure, your health insurance company will not cover your fees.

How about a cheap breast implant cost?

Do not get easily lulled by a cheap surgery price. Finding cheap implant procedures should not be your primary goal as this might lead you to unsatisfactory results. Inversely, a high breast implant cost does not guarantee the best results. Your decision for choosing a surgeon or the type of implant fill to use must not be based on their cost but on professional qualification, board certification, experience, feedback and quality.
